Our Mutt

What always happens when I talk to someone about how I’m not sure if we should keep Chester, is he is all cute when I get home and I love him to pieces.

Yes, you can think I am an evil, but I am not a very good doggy “mom.” We don’t go on nearly enough walks to keep Chester entertained. We have no backyard and no place where he can run freely. We barely have any room inside the house where he can run around. He also whines at 5:00 in the morning when he wants to go outside, and I’ve been worried about getting up with a baby and getting up with the dog.

But today I was thinking about it all over again, telling someone maybe we should look for a new home for him; and then I get home and Chester is cuddly, he played with his octopus, we went on a walk, and he was all lovey. And I do love him, really. Not like some women love their dogs, but enough. Despite the shedding, running eyes, and $150 vet bills every time we go (stinking infections).

Oh, Chester.

  1. I understand your conundrum. I live with the lovable, but hopeless “incontinent kitty”. She’s a toughie. I love her, but girl, is she difficult!

  2. Hi Jessica,
I am a fellow PBS-er and I followed the link to your blog and this post just breaks my heart. Whatever decision you make it will be the right one for you and your family. Good luck.

  3. If you feel guilty, don’t. I loved him for almost 8 years. He never howled, or asked to be let out at 5 in the morning. He slept with me and woke when I did and we went outside to walk. We came in and had breakfast and I left him all day while I worked and he never had any accidents, was always glad to see me and ready for his afternoon walk. I hugged him and loved him and laughed at him-he was such a funny little guy. I truly miss him, he was as fine a companion as anybody could ever hope for. I am not sure I will find another like him. Don’t feel bad, you did the right thing and I am the better for it.

    • Wow! Thank you for finding this. I loved Chester and I know we did the right thing even though it was hard. I am glad you had a lot of great years and he was rightly spoiled.

      Love, Jessie
