Pregnancy Update: 21.5 Weeks

Baby

This has been a really rough week, so perhaps the worst time to write an update. But just in case you’re wondering, here’s where we are with this pregnancy!

I will be 22 weeks on Wednesday. So far, everything has been healthy with baby. Momma has been sick, tired, tired, sick, and more tired. For a few weeks in the second trimester I felt the amazing, Superwoman vibe. It is GONE.

The past week I’ve been so painfully tired I have slept at every available opportunity. Except at night, when I toss and turn like a crazy woman. It doesn’t matter how tired I am, I can’t seem to get to sleep at night.

This does not bode well for my house, which is a disaster; my cooking, which has been minimal this week; or the rest of the pregnancy, as Mr. V goes back to work full-time this week. (He’s worked sporadically throughout the summer, but his in-service days start Monday, I believe.)

I am definitely wearing maternity clothes–about two weeks ago I caved to all maternity–and I am showing a little. Because of my weight I definitely don’t show as readily as thinner women, but I can tell and I think most other people can, too.

My back problems are not nearly as bad this pregnancy, probably due to the fact that I’m not at a desk all day. If I sit at my computer too long (or in the church pew), the tailbone pain definitely flairs up. I also have the awful acid reflux I experienced with Libbie. Another full head of hair?

I haven’t experienced many food cravings. I like sugar, a lot. I would probably feel better if I did not indulge this craving so much. Other than that, I am just hungry. Almost constantly.

I am seeing a midwife with this baby, and I am hoping once again to have an unmedicated birth. If this is going to happen, though, I need to exercise. I know my body is not ready for birth at this time because I have been dreadfully lazy (see: sick, tired).

Baby Boy sort of has a first name but not a middle name. We’re open to (rather traditional) suggestions, if you have any! First name has two syllables, our last name has two syllables. (No, it’s not Vanderbilt!)

I haven’t taken any belly pictures this time around … am too preoccupied with running after my current rascal.

So, how many of you are pregnant too? Want to commiserate?

  1. Peter? You know I am rather partial to that name 🙂 It would make a nice middle name. And he was a pretty awesome dude in the Bible.

  2. I am 18.3 weeks pregnant and am overweight so I don't show like a skinny person either. However, I can feel the added belly strain.

I have actually felt pretty good the past two weeks but I have days where I just sit at the computer and my feet are paying for it big time.

It is nice to find someone you is going through the same things. This will be my 3rd. I have an 11 yr old and 4 yr old.

    Thanks for sharing your story!

  3. Maybe ask your midwife if she can check your sugar a little earlier than the standard GTT?

The extreme tiredness and tossing and turning at night can be signs of high blood sugar. Insulin resistance & PCOS sometimes go hand in hand. Of course, when I medicated the exhaustion with more comfort food, that made the cycle even worse. This time I am eating the south beach/gestational diabetes diet from the beginning, and I can see that any slip-ups push me right back in the bed.

  4. I'm 33 weeks today according to drs… but I'm not sure I'm that far along. I'm having a hard time sleeping because of joint pain in my lower half– hips especially. Otherwise I'm ok… besides the insulin. No one should have to be pregnant, avoid carbs like the plague AND have to stab themselves 8-10 times a day. It just aint right! 🙂 I hope you're feeling better soon. If I were there, I'd come over and clean for you!

  5. Oh girl. You have my deepest sympathies. I had horrid reflux when I was pregnant. HORRID. And I didn't like sugar. Weird. I had the lower back pain too. Misery. It's all worth it though!!! How are you surviving the heat??

  6. I'm only 7 weeks, but I am horribly exhausted. Maybe it's because I have a 1 year old too? but I can hardly manage to get anything done… my house is trashed, I finally got half my dishes int he dishwasher and ran it, but still have a sink full… ugh… it was never this bad with my first!
If we have a boy his name will be caleb. =) feel free to "borrow" it for your little boy's middle name!

  7. How about "Grant" for a middle name? This is my son's name and we paired it with a 3 syllable middle name and a 2 syllable last name.

  8. Jess, I cannot imagine being pregnant this summer in the crazy heat. Yuck. I never had trouble sleeping – until I was pregnant. Then, I couldn't sleep at all (and have never gotten back to my previous "can always sleep and sleep through anything" ways). Ugh. I hope you get some good rest soon!!!

  9. Jessie,
I'm pregnant again too! And I can totally relate to the "not sleeping at night" thing. It's awful. In fact, I should probably be napping right now, since A is…

  10. Hi Jessie
Definitely get your sugars checked out. Even if the 'tests' say they're fine, avoid sugar like the plague (hard, I KNOW). It just feeds the tired cycle. I'm 32 weeks along right now, and I feel pretty good (if I eat properly, i.e. no sugar 🙂
As for a middle name, how about Adam after Daddy? Unless the initials spell out something undesirable, of course!

    Take care

    Ingrid
