Miserly Meals: Healthy, Tasty Recipes Under 75¢ per Serving

I received the cookbook Miserly Meals in the mail this week from Paperbackswap, so I’m testing out a few recipes from it this week. It looks promising!

(Speaking of good books … I started Secrets of Eden by Chris Bohjalian yesterday and I am about to go dive back into it. Can hardly put it down!)

Sunday: Leftovers
Monday: Teriyaki Vegetables (Miserly Meals) tossed with pasta and chicken breast
Tuesday: Pizza (frozen, homemade crust), salad
Wednesday: Spanish Potatoes (Miserly Meals)
Thursday: Ziti with Italian Sausage
Friday: likely at Mr. V’s school before football game
Saturday: Leftovers

Several people had asked me about the free-range, rare-breed pork we bought from a local farm. Our verdict is: sausage–amazing, pork chops–super-delicious, roasts–not great. The two roasts I had were a fresh ham and a pork shoulder. I had never cooked a fresh ham before, so maybe I just needed to use a different method. I was disappointed with the shoulder though. It didn’t seem to have enough fat to really fall apart in the slow cooker.

We will definitely be buying more sausage and pork chops from Sequatchie Cove, though! (As well as beef, eggs, and produce, when I can.)

  1. Hi! Just found you surfin blogs! I use a couple of recipes out of the Miserly Moms book too!
The Chicken Pot Pie is really good and we also make the Messy Chicken (It took me a while to get passed all the different things she adds in there but it was actually really good. At least our family eats it! 😉
    Have a great week!
