{Giveaway is CLOSED. The winner is #16, Monique. Congratulations!}

I began fostering a love for books in my children before they were even conceived.

As soon as I discovered Paperbackswap, I started collecting books for my future children and storing them in a wicker trunk, along with some items from our childhoods. (Now that trunk houses Libbie’s dress-up clothes.) Piles of American Girl, Series of Unfortunate Event, Judy Blume, and countless board books accumulated.

(Of course, back in 2007 books on Paperbackswap only cost about $1.50 in shipping. Now it’s $3.50. So children’s books are often a better deal on deep discount in stores or at thrift stores.)

I was so happy when Libbie stopped trying to throw books across the room and instead would sit and listen, staring attentively at brightly colored pages. She loved Karen Katz books, with fun flaps for her to lift.

David, at 9 months, is definitely still in the “try to eat the book” stage; but as my second child, I have more hope that he will progress to actually listening to a book. Someday.

Recently, Tommy Nelson sent me three of their new Hermie books for my kiddos. Libbie already loves Hermie; we have a couple of the DVDs that she likes to watch. I love Hermie because he teaches wonderful biblical lessons and was created by Max Lucado. Mr. Lucado may not know me, but I worked on one of his products at LifeWay, sang in a choir behind him, and just generally love his books.

The Level Two Reader Hermie book was a little long for Libbie (she’s not yet 3; the book is for ages 4-8). But she sat and listened to the whole story about Hermie and his friend Wormie and how they questioned their purpose. Why aren’t they spotted like the ladybug? Why can’t they carry their home like a snail? I think it will be a great book for when she does learn to read.

I also got two padded board books for David: Thank You God, for Loving Me and Thank You God, for Blessing Me. These sweet books are rhymes about Hermie that teach you baby basic concepts about God. When David wasn’t trying to eat the books, I think he liked them. And I love reading books that are not only fun but also expose my kids to godly principles.

Would you like to win a set of these two board books by Max Lucado? Tommy Nelson is generously supplying them to one of my readers. Just leave a (relevant) comment on this post to be entered to win!

For an extra entry, Tweet, FB, etc, this link and leave me another comment that you did so.

  1. I started collecting books for my kids before they were born too. Only a few–not a trunkful!–but I inscribed them each time, so it's neat to look at the date and message from long before they were born.

  2. I began reading to my oldest when she was little more than a baby. She loves to read and learned to read on her own when she was 4. Now she is a 6 year old that reads a few years beyond her level. My youngest is a boy who equally loves books as much as his sister. I definitly feel that reading to children when they are young really helps them when it is time for them to learn to read.

  5. My oldest loves to read! My youngest is only 3 months but I hope she loves reading too. We haven't read any Hermie books yet, but they sound great!

  7. I, like you, hoped and prayed my daughter would love to read, and I'm so thankful she does! I've never read a Hermie book, but they sound like something I'd love now that I've got a baby boy. Thanks for the giveaway, Jessie- I hope you're doing well!

  8. I haven't read any of those books. My one-year-old-today baby girl likes the Karen Katz books too. She digs the flaps 🙂

  11. These look like wonderful books. I'd love to have them for my grandbaby. I recently picked up a Children's Bible, in perfect condition, at a garage sale- score!

  12. When we found out we were pregnant, the first thing I did was go out and buy some of my favorite childhood books for our little one. We read to her all the time and hope she grows up to be an avid reader like her Daddy and I!
