This is one of the oldest recipes on my site. In fact, it’s one of the oldest recipes in my arsenal. I remember making this in a slow cooker in my little on-campus apartment during my senior year of college.

(Side note: a crockpot is the first thing Mr. V and I bought together. Before we were even married. We were engaged 17 months so we had a long time to do things like that. We also lived in on-campus apartments next to each other, so we were both able to use it. And YES, he did cook … back then. Back when we ate a lot of Hamburger Helper.)

That said, I have no idea where the recipe came from. AllRecipes or a magazine, possibly! I know at the same time I copied down a similar recipe for Slow Cooker Chicken Cacciatore. I used both of these in an article I wrote for ParentLife, which made me remember that they’re both tasty, economical, and fast!

I’ll share that cacciatore recipe next week; for now, here’s the BBQ chicken. It looks very liquid-y in my picture – I used crushed pineapple instead of chunks. If you drain your pineapple chunks, the sauce will be a little thicker and intense.

BBQ Crockpot Chicken

Yield: 4-6 servings


  • 18 oz. bottled barbecue sauce (or homemade)
  • 6 oz. pineapple chunks
  • 1 green pepper, large dice
  • 1/2 onion, large dice
  • 1 clove garlic, minced
  • 1 1/2 lbs. boneless, skinless chicken


Place chicken in the bottom of a slow cooker. In a medium-sized bowl, mix together remaining ingredients, then pour over chicken.

Cook on high 3-4 hours or low 6-8.

  1. I love this recipe- I found it here and have made it many, many times. Sweet potatoes also taste amazing right along with the chicken in the sauce. I have also cooked this in my pressure cooker with similar results- only takes about 20 minutes! Thanks for sharing!
